Transient Surreality: A Philosophical Journey Through Fine Art Photography

For the past eighteen months, I have been deeply immersed in a private commission of extraordinary intimacy, one that has intertwined with the fabric of my being in ways both subtle and profound. This journey transcended the boundaries of a mere project; it became an odyssey of the soul, undertaken for a client who occupies a cherished place within my heart. As I traversed various corners of the world, I found myself not only exploring new landscapes but also embarking on an inner voyage, one that was enriched and deepened by the teachings of Rick Rubin’s “The Creative Act.”

Rubin’s work became more than just a book; it transformed into a philosophical compass, guiding me into the uncharted territories of purposeless creation—a realm where the boundaries of conventional thought dissolve, and where experimentation and play emerge as the only true currencies of expression. From this wellspring of liberated creativity emerged ‘Transient Surreality,’ a visual odyssey in conceptual photography that defies the limitations of the ordinary, inviting viewers to step beyond the familiar and into the enigmatic realms that lie just beyond the veil of our daily perception.

The Genesis of Transient Surreality: An Exercise in Experimental Photography

As this chapter draws to a close, I find myself returning to the origins of the journey, revisiting the initial images that marked the beginning of this creative pilgrimage. These early works, all captured on large format film, have since been meticulously scanned, preserving the fleeting moments that were once held only in the delicate balance of light and time. There is a distinct beauty in this process of rediscovery, an intimate closeness that seems to permeate each image. Perhaps it is the passage of time that has imbued these works with a sense of reverence, or perhaps it is the unique nature of analog photography itself—the singularity of each shot, the unrepeatable essence of each frame—that lends them their meditative quality.

These images stand in contrast to the more recent works, where objects in flight convey a dynamic sense of movement and possibility. Yet, neither is more right or wrong than the other; both hold their rightful place within the larger tapestry of this body of work. What emerges is a deeper narrative, one that invites us to question the very nature of transient existence through the lens of fine art photography.

The Philosophical Underpinnings

In these images, we encounter the tension between permanence and impermanence, between the fleeting and the enduring. We are drawn into a contemplation of what it means to exist in a world that is in constant motion, where the only constant is change itself. Through this lens, the work becomes more than just a series of images; it becomes a meditation on the human condition, a visual exploration of the spaces we inhabit, both physically and metaphorically.

Immersed in the profound musings of Rick Rubin’s “The Creative Act,” I embraced the freedom to experiment and play, allowing ‘Transient Surreality’ to germinate as a visual odyssey transcending the boundaries of conventional expression. Traversing the landscapes of this long-term artistic pilgrimage, I found myself captivated by the transient poetry of hotel beds. These unassuming crucibles of experience became the silent narrators of my visual discourse.

The Metaphysics of Hotel Beds

Through the lens, I sought to unravel the metaphysical tapestry woven within the linens, exploring the interplay between transience and eternity. In the realm of hotel beds, I discovered a symbolic nexus of human existence—an arena where the ephemeral and the eternal engage in a dance of paradoxes. The bed, a vessel of nocturnal dreams and intimate soliloquies, emerges as a liminal space, evoking existential contemplation. It beckons us to ponder the fluidity of time, the interplay of memories, and the elusive nature of identity.

‘Transient Surreality’ ventures beyond the confines of the tangible, inviting viewers to transcend the mundane and delve into the metaphysical dimensions of our shared human experience. As we grapple with the enigma of existence, my work serves as a visual symphony, harmonising the ephemeral with the eternal, and beckoning us to lose ourselves in the profound depths of introspection and imagination.

The Challenges and Revelations in Conceptual Photography

Embarking on this journey of hotel beds has been a voyage filled with unexpected twists and turns. Yet, amidst the challenges, I find myself revelling in every moment, even those that push me beyond my comfort zone. Recently, while immersed in learning the intricacies of the Platinum Palladium process in Durham, I encountered a setback that tested my resolve.

Staying in a different hotel each night to pursue my artistic vision of international hotel photography, I faced a technical glitch when my air release broke. Confronted with the choice between surrendering to the obstacle or seeking assistance, I opted for the latter. After meticulously setting up the shot, I approached the front desk, where I found an unexpected ally in the manager. Despite the unconventional request, he was not only willing but also genuinely intrigued by the process of experimental photography.

The Power of Connection

As we navigated through the nuances of my unique camera setup, I was struck by the manager’s openness to stepping outside the bounds of his usual responsibilities. This experience illuminated a profound truth: in our solitary pursuits, we often overlook the curiosity and interest others may harbour for our craft. By extending a hand and inviting them into our world, we not only forge connections but also broaden perspectives.

In the solitude of hotel rooms, where it’s just me, my art, and a select few, moments of self-doubt sometimes creep in. Yet, the unwavering support of those who believe in this project serves as a beacon of encouragement, reminding me of the significance of sharing my journey with a wider audience. It’s a realisation that compels me to expand the horizons of my creativity and embrace the power of community.

The Ongoing Odyssey in Fine Art Photography

As ‘Transient Surreality’ continues to unfold, it reveals new layers of meaning and insight with each passing day. This project has become more than a series of images; it is a living, breathing exploration of the human condition, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the depths of introspection and imagination through the medium of conceptual photography.

Through the lens of hotel beds and fleeting moments captured on film, we are encouraged to contemplate our own transient existence and the profound beauty that lies within the ephemeral nature of our experiences. As this journey in fine art and experimental photography progresses, it promises to challenge our perceptions, stir our emotions, and ultimately, connect us more deeply to the shared human experience that binds us all.
